NameKaren Shreeve

Role in LLMF (Wales):

Chair

Joined LLMF in: (Year)

2017

Background / Day Job:

Retired. I was a nurse and a midwife in Swansea area all my working life

Why I became a trustee:

For the last 15 years before I retired I worked in blood transfusion. So when I was approached about joining LLMF as a trustee it was an opportunity to stay involved in healthcare in a voluntary capacity

What I enjoy about being part of LLMF (Wales):

LLMF is a small, friendly charity where we can personally engage with our fundraisers. It’s really interesting to hear their stories of why they are doing it, and to see the benefits that their efforts bring to patients.

Outside of LLMF:

I like to try and stay fit through swimming, walking and the gym. I meet with friends every week to knit and chat together. I have also been learning to speak Welsh since I retired. The challenge is fitting all this into a busy retiree’s schedule.

Name: Melanie Thomas

Role in LLMF (Wales): Treasurer and Trustee

Joined LLMF in: 2019

Background / Day Job: Before retiring in 2016, I worked for 37 years in the private healthcare sector. Since retiring, I have become involved in a few, very different, voluntary roles, which I love.

Why I became a trustee: My mum was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2005. She received amazing care on Wards 11 and 12 in Singleton Hospital and we, as a family, had fundraised for the Haematology Department. A chance, and serendipitous, encounter with Karen Shreeve, resulted in my joining the charity as a trustee in 2019.

What I enjoy about being part of LLMF (Wales): I really enjoy working alongside a group of like-minded people who are passionate about supporting local haematology patients and staff. I also enjoy liaising with, and building a relationship with, the Haematology team in Singleton. This helps us appreciate the demands and pressures experienced on the wards and learning first hand how to support them, their patients and patients families.

Outside of LLMF: I’m a besotted grandmother and love spending time with my family. I am a keen walker – I’ve completed the Portuguese coastal route of the Camino de Santiago, Hadrian’s Wall and am, very slowly, chipping away at the Wales Coast Path. Yoga and beaches – sometimes together – are a passion of mine.
